Grasslands Models is the model making blog of Thomas Haynes, based in Swindon (UK).
Tom has over 20 years’ experience of building and painting various models including dioramas, buildings, figures, model railways, model trains and science fiction models out of brass, plastic, nickel silver and resin. He is a member of the 009 Society, The 2mm Scale Association, and the Broad Gauge Society and is also an active member of the RMWeb community.
Tom developed an exhibition-standard model railway layout called ‘Brewery Pit’ in OO scale, which is set in the 1940s and depicts an imaginary location in Burton on Trent and has been exhibited at model railway shows in Swindon, Reading and the Midlands in recent years. Click here to find out more.
Tom also offers commission model making services, with recent projects including etched, compensated chassis construction for OO scale steam locomotives and the build and painting, to a studio prop standard, of an 18” Thunderbird 3 from Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds. Click here to find out more.
The Grasslands Models YouTube channel also features plenty of video footage and photos from model railway exhibitions and current projects and receives thousands of views with the BBC also using footage to promote local model railway shows.
Away from model making, Tom is a professional wildlife scientist and commercial drone pilot specialising in European habitats, particularly grassland systems, and works across the UK and the EU and recently spent three years mapping the grasslands of the Scottish coastline.
Tom also writes novels and articles for local papers and is an active musician in various bands including his main act ‘Grasslands’.
